East Beach ~ Barrier Beach

Land Use
What are the threats to birds nesting on the barrier beach?

During the summer months, the beach is frequented by tourists and residents of Rhode Island.  However this use comes at a cost to both the beach and the animals that utilize it.  The nesting sites of piping plovers and least terns are disturbed by the curious, and often unaware beach users.  Certain measures, like roping off sections of the beach and construction of predator exclosures, have been taken to protect areas for these birds.
