Placed on the U.S. Endangered Species List in 1986, the piping plover is sand to gray colored with a white underside. These birds lay a clutch of four eggs above the high-tide line on sandy beaches with little vegetation. Both parents play a role in protecting their brood. The young are precocious, feeding at the strand line shortly after birth.
