This triangular shaped clam is the largest found along the East Coast of the US. They can grow up to 6 inches long and live in the surf zone, where the waves break. Humans only eat the adductor muscle of this clam, usually in chowders. Sea stars and whelks prey on surf clams but the clams can sometimes use their strong foot to "jump" to safety.
