A brown alga (division Phaeophyta) with many branches that may have fine hairs, giving it's blades a feathery appearance. It grows in thick clumps in tide pools and below the low tide level of the open coast and estuaries. This alga can grow up to 60 cm (23.6 in.) in length and has vacuoles that contain sulfuric and malic acids.
