A red alga (Rhodophyta) found year in subtidal zones of estuaries and in warm, shallow, quiet waters such as coastal lagoons. Its color ranges from brownish red to yellowish green. This is one of the three most common red algae found in Rhode Island. This alga is used in the production of agar and is characterized by irregular, rubbery branches.
