These algae grow anchored to rocks in the lower intertidal zone. This member of the Rhodophyta (red) division of algae varies greatly both in color (from brown to red) and shape (oblong to elongated). It grows up to 50 cm (19.7 in.) in length with a blade width greater than 1.5 cm (0.6 in.), lacks a midrib, and is not branched.
