Galilee Salt Marsh

Physical Characteristics

Where in the world is the Galilee Salt Marsh found?

Rhode Island is in the north east region of the United States, it is bordered by Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean at 41 22’ 50 N Latitude, 71 30’ 20W Longitude.

The salt marsh we are visiting is in Narragansett, Rhode Island in an area known as Point Judith Neck. The marsh borders the fishing village of Galilee.

Galilee and Great Island (an island joined to Galilee by a small bridge) can be reached by traveling on a route named the Galilee Escape Road. The Galilee Escape Road bisects the Galilee Salt Marsh on its way to the village. This road was built after a 1954 hurricane, Hurricane Carol. Residents living on Great Island were unable to leave after the hurricane because the ocean had flooded the only exit. This older road ran parallel to the ocean, in the lowlands (see the historical maps). The Galilee Escape Road was built in 1956.
