Common Tern
(Sterna hirundo)

This smallest of New England's terns nests in colonies on sand dunes. They range in size from 13"-16" (33-40 cm) and have a black cap, gray back and wings, red legs and feet, and a forked tail. They fly over open water looking for food (small fish and crustaceans). Adult terns will attack any creatures that pose a threat to their young. They are commonly found in the Bay from May-October.
