Great Black-backed Gull
(Larus marinus)
This is the largest gull species found in Rhode Island, reaching lengths of 31" (78 cm). Their large size, white head, and black back make them distinct from other gull species. They fly with slow wing beats and sail in circles, high in the sky. Great Black-backed gulls often steal the food of other gulls. They have a varied diet, ranging from fish and small birds to garbage. They are year-round residents of the Bay.
