Herring Gull (Larus argentatus) This gull is distinguished by its light-gray back and wings, white head, and yellow bill with a red spot on the lower mandible. They reach lengths of 26" (65 cm). Herring gulls eat almost anything- they have become terrific scavengers that will eat carcasses, other birds, garbage, and shellfish. They often break open clams and other shellfish by dropping them from the air. This gull is commonly seen year-round along the coast, especially in harbors. |
