Bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) These schooling fish are greenish-blue above and silvery below. They are efficient swimmers aided by their torpedo shaped body and forked tail. They are rarely over 39" (1 m) in length. Young "snapper" bluefish are commonly found in estuaries. They are voracious predators, feeding upon a variety of fish and squid. Bluefish can be seen in Narragansett Bay from May to late November. They are popular with recreational fishermen since they put up a good fight when caught by trolling or surf casting. |
