Common Mummichog
(Fundulus heteroclitus)

These fish are quite small and fat, usually growing to 2 1/2" (6 cm) and rarely more than 4" (10 cm) in length. Coloration is green or steel blue with white and yellow belly spots as well as irregular silver side stripes. Females are generally lighter green and lighter below. They inhabit estuaries, salt marshes, tidal creeks, and can exist in foul water with little oxygen. They generally stay very close to shore and in large schooling groups. Their diet includes plant and animal matter as well as dead fish and their own eggs.
