Sandtiger Shark (Carcharias taurus) The sandtiger shark is a large shark often found in shallow water. They are gray-brown on top, white below, and have yellowish spots on the sides. These sharks can reach lengths of 9' (2.7 m). They feed mainly on fish and are known for their large, pointed teeth that are always visible as the shark swims. Sandtigers are popular in aquaria because they survive well in captivity. Sandtigers were once common in Narragansett Bay but their numbers have been greatly reduced due to overfishing. Sandtigers are now a protected species in the U.S. and many other countries. |
