Scup, Porgy (Stenotomus chrysops) Scups are generally iridescent dull silver with some flecks of blue and a white belly. Their heads are short with the eyes set high on the head. The spiny portion of the dorsal fin is larger and higher than the soft part near the tail. They are usually less than 12" (30cm) in length. Mainly bottom feeders, their diet includes crustaceans, worms, sand dollars, young squid, and fish fry. They are common in sounds and bays and are found schooling in sandy bottoms near the coast. They are present in Narragansett Bay from May through late October. |
