Northern Searobin, Common Searobin
(Prionotus carolinus)

These fish can be identified by their wing-like pectoral fins, the black spot on the first dorsal fin and the dark blotches of red, gray, and brown along the back, with a dirty white underside. They are usually less than 10" (25 cm) long. They are bottom dwellers and inhabit the Bay from May to October. They feed in the mud on worms and other small prey. When held out of the water, they produce a distinguishable croaking sound.
