Striped Bass
(Morone saxatilis)
These fish have silvery sides with 7-8 black horizontal strips on each side, olive green to blue on top. They can reach 6' (1.8 m) in length, but average 20 to 30" (50 to 75 cm). They normally live in salt or brackish waters, but enter freshwater streams to spawn. They are commonly found in shallow estuaries and bays and off surf-swept beaches. They swim in schools near the surface or in the middle of the water column. They feed on smaller prey such as shrimp, squid, small fish, lobster and crab. Sometimes called stripers, these fish are highly prized as game here in the Bay.
