Tautog (Tautog onitis) Also called blackfish, they are gray-brown with mottled sides that are blotched with darker color. They can reach lengths of 3' (90 cm). These territorial fish are commonly found in rocky environments and hard-bottom reefs. They are often sighted near rock piles, bridge pilings, artificial reefs and old wrecks. At night they seek shelter and rest. They feed on a variety of mollusks and crustaceans such as mussels, clams, and crabs, using their strong crushing teeth. Tautog are most commonly seen in Narragansett Bay from mid-April to November. |
