European Opossum Shrimp
(Praunus flexuosus)
The body of these shrimp is translucent greenish or yellowish with dark streaks and a pink tail. They are not large, only growing to 1" (25 mm) long. Opossum shrimp, also known as mysids, are not true shrimp. The European opossum shrimp arrived by ballast water, and were first discovered on Cape Cod in 1960. They have since spread up the coast to the Gulf of Maine. They are often found hanging vertically in the water near the surface under marina floats.
