Northern Rock Barnacle (Semibalanus balanoides) The northern rock barnacle, is the most common intertidal barnacle in New England. Found concentrated in one of the upper life zones of the rocky shore, these small shrimp-like crustaceans cement their heads to rocks and build a limestone 'house' around their bodies. They eat by filtering the water. During low tide they close up their house of shells to wait for the water to return. They may grow up to 1" (2.5 cm) in diameter. |
