Orange Striped Sea Anemone (Diadumene lineata, long known by its older name Haliplanella luciae) These anemones have blackish bodies with orange, yellow, red or white vertical lines. Generally quite small, they are only 3/4" (2 cm) tall and 1/4" (5 mm) wide. They have 25-50 tentacles. They can be found in tidal marshes and on intertidal rocks and seaweed. They are also at times extraordinarily abundant in the fouling community on the sides of floats in marinas. These anemones are native to Japan and came to New England in the 1890s via ship fouling. |
