Common Sea Star
(Asterias forbesi)

The upperside sea stars are dark brown or greenish black with orange or red tones. The spines are white and the underside is yellow or beige. Like most species of sea stars, these have five arms, any of which can be regrown if the animal loses one. The large orange dot on the top surface is the mother pore (madreporite) that takes in water to move the tube feet and support the body. They generally grow to an approximate radius of 5" (13 cm). Sea stars prey upon bivalves, snails, and barnacles. Sea stars are found in the Bay year round.
