Italian and Portugese arrivals are shown at Providence's State Pier No. 1 in December, 1913, after debarking from the Venezia, a ship of the Fabre Line. Because the Fabre steamships made calls in Italy and Portugal en route from Marseilles, many immigrants from those countries came directly to Providence, though others, especially Italians, traveled to the city after landing in New York.
