Ninigret Salt Pond

History

What site was proposed for Rhode Island's first nuclear power plant?

You guessed it! In 1976 the abandoned Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Air Station on the north side of Ninigret Pond was thought to be an ideal location for a nuclear power plant. After much research and protest from residents, this proposed site was not used.

What is the Charlestown Naval Air Station used for today?

Today, the former naval air station is a public park (Ninigret Park) and a National Wildlife Refuge. It is used for a variety of recreational purposes, including nature trails, full court basketball, volleyball, tennis, baseball, BMX bike courses, freshwater swimming, fitness trails, and a senior center.
