Ninigret Salt Pond

Glacial Geology

The geology of this area of southern Rhode Island was heavily influenced by the continental glaciers that covered this area thousands of years ago. This map shows the locations of types of glacial deposits. The mixed sediments (shown in brown) show where one of the glaciers ended. This is now called the Charlestown Moraine and it's easy to see when you're standing on the shore of the salt pond.
