3. How much dissolved oxygen is in Narragansett Bay?
The surface waters of Narragansett Bay are at or near dissolved oxygen saturation all the time. Wave and wind motion help get oxygen into the water from the air and phytoplankton produce oxygen in the water.
The bottom waters of Narragansett Bay are more variable. Bottom waters can become very low in oxygen when the conditions are right (see the "What is dissolved oxygen?" page). The bottom waters in parts of Narragansett Bay are sometimes hypoxic or anoxic. This mostly happens in the upper Bay.
