Gabriel Fahrenheit developed the Fahrenheit scale (degrees F) in 1724. Temperature scales are based on fixed points, temperatures that are the same every time they are measured. Fahrenheit used three fixed points to define his temperature scale, the temperature of an ice, water and salt mixture was zero, freezing point of just water was 32 degrees and the temperature inside a person's mouth was 100 degrees. This made the boiling point of water 212 degrees.
