Temperature Scales

Celsius and Fahrenheit are two temperature scales used around the world. Only the United States uses Fahrenheit, the other countries use Celsius. Scientists also use the Kelvin temperature scale. In oceanography, temperature is usually reported in degrees Celsius (i.e. 10ºC).

Fahrenheit     Celsius     Kelvin

Converting between Temperature Scales

Common temperatures on different scales:
Temperature Fahrenheit Celsius Kelvin
Freezing point of water 32 0 273
Boiling point of water 212 100 373
Absolute zero -459 -273 0
Average human body temperature 98.6 37 310
Average room temperature 68-77 20-25 293-298
