In 1745, Carolus Linnaeus made a scale with the freezing point of water at zero degrees and the boiling point of water at 100 degrees. This was a Centigrade scale because it had 100 degrees between freezing and boiling (centigrade roughly means one hundred steps). In 1948 the Centigrade scale was replaced with the Celsius scale (degrees C), named for Anders Celsius who also worked with temperature scales in the 1700's. The Celsius scale has essentially the same freezing point (0 degrees) and boiling point (100 degrees) as the Centigrade scale but the fixed points are defined more precisely.
