Next let's count the organisms that live here. We are using a quadrat, which looks like four rulers put together in a square shape. The quadrat box allows us to look at the same amount of area (space) in each of these zones. We place the quadrat next to the transect line at the highest level where the Black Zone begins. We count the plants and animals in this area, then write the numbers down on our recording sheet. The idea is to keep moving the quadrat down the transect line and record results for each life zone.
