We have to walk past some really tall reeds that have fluffy seed heads. Oh, these are common reeds. We can tell we're on still near the edge of the marsh because common reeds only grow in the upper marsh. How tall are they? Probably about 4 or 5 feet tall.
Stretching ahead of us is the middle salt marsh zone. Look how many shades of green you can see. There, growing along the edge of the marsh, is the Spartina alternaflora, or smooth cordgrass. It's alot taller than the other grasses and grows near the edge of the water.

Look how green and lush it looks all around us! This is a wonderful place, isn't it? I wonder how all of this began?
